Packing tips for relocating in retirement
This might sound like the most obvious retirement relocation tip ever, but we’ll say it anyways… simpler is better! You may get the urge to pack it all up and take it with you. But less is always more in situations like these!
This is a time when you should be making room for new adventures and experiences in your life! It’s easier said than done, though.
So as a first packing tip, we urge you to try not to clutter your new home with things of the past that may or may not have any emotional value. As you start clearing out the clutter, keep these packing tips for relocating in retirement in mind:
- Get rid of any unwanted paperwork lingering around in your drawers, file cabinets, and so on. Just remember to exercise caution when shredding any confidential information like credit card receipts or old pay stubs. Also, remember to keep an archive of important financial documents, including investment statements, tax returns, etc.
- Destroy any electronics like computers, old tablets, or phones. Don’t just throw them in the trash.
- If you’re wondering if you should get rid of items that you feel are still in good condition, that’s not a good enough reason to hold onto them! Donate or leave them on the curb for someone else. After all, one man’s trash is another one’s treasure, right? If you decide to donate, remember to save the receipts for a tax break and use it to buy yourself a housewarming gift!
- If you have a few valuable items and you feel like it would be a shame to throw that money you spent down the drain, never fear, Google’s here! You can take advantage of websites like Craig’s List, eBay, or any other second-hand sites to resell your items.
- Consider how many things you REALLY need to preserve a memory. Are you hoarding, or will one item serve as a special reminder? And be honest here. Do you really need every single fingerpaint picture from when your now adult child was in pre-k, or will one or two be enough?
By now, all of this probably seems overwhelming to you. But as a packing tip for relocating in retirement, we advise you just to take it slow. This process should be relieving and natural. It shouldn’t be stressing you out.
Allow yourself all the extra time you need, but begin early to make sure you don’t feel like you’ve rushed important decisions about what to toss and what to take with you.
