6. Milford, Delaware
If you’re thinking about spending your golden years in one of Delaware’s popular beach towns, brace yourself for a pretty high cost of living. Better yet, choose instead the more affordable Milford, where living costs are roughly the same as the national average.
On the other hand, the cost of living in popular Bethany Beach, right on the coast and about 40 miles south of Milford, is about 83% higher than the national average. That’s a huge difference!
When it comes to median home values, Milford is again a far more affordable option; the average house here is $224,500, while a similar house in Bethany Beach is $436,100.
The fact that Milford is around 10 miles from Slaughter Beach means that you’d still be able to hit the shore within a 15-minute drive. And if you’re interested in visiting other popular Delaware beaches, it takes around 40 minutes to drive to Dewey or Rehoboth and another 20 minutes to Bethany.
Downtown, there are many boutiques and restaurants, as well as the Riverfront Theater and the Milford Museum.
