6. Milford, Delaware

If you’re thinking about spending your golden years in one of Delaware’s popular beach towns, brace yourself for a pretty high cost of living. Better yet, choose instead the more affordable Milford, where living costs are roughly the same as the national average.

On the other hand, the cost of living in popular Bethany Beach, right on the coast and about 40 miles south of Milford, is about 83% higher than the national average. That’s a huge difference!

When it comes to median home values, Milford is again a far more affordable option; the average house here is $224,500, while a similar house in Bethany Beach is $436,100.

The fact that Milford is around 10 miles from Slaughter Beach means that you’d still be able to hit the shore within a 15-minute drive. And if you’re interested in visiting other popular Delaware beaches, it takes around 40 minutes to drive to Dewey or Rehoboth and another 20 minutes to Bethany.

Downtown, there are many boutiques and restaurants, as well as the Riverfront Theater and the Milford Museum.

  1. once again weather is great however mostly on the East Coast or at least more east than the west! no thanks!

  2. And let us not forget the humidity. Nor the poverty of Mississippi and Louisiana. True, we are not college-bound, so the abysmal education system need not concern us. Every state has something to offer, including all the southern states, but for overall comfort and recreation I prefer the West, and for coziness and social interaction just stay in New England.

From the two comments below, it looks as though you have posted this retirement story before.

  3. I lived in Augusta 33 yrs. We didn’t call it disgusta for naught. It’s hotter than sin in the summer. And gets pretty cold in the winter. Not at all temperate weather.
