Getting your payments

The Social Security Administration started phasing out paper checks more than a decade ago. Now, these benefits are issued electronically. Individuals who get benefits have a couple of digital options. First things first, Social Security benefits can be easily distributed via direct deposit.

However, individuals can visit their local branch or even contact a Social Security office to sign up. Beneficiaries should prepare all the needed documents, such as their Social Security number, their financial institution’s routing number, but also their account number and their account type.

Social Security benefits can also be sent through a Direct Express card, which is a debit card that beneficiaries can use to access those benefits without having a bank account. Monthly benefits could also be deposited directly onto the card, and beneficiaries could use that card to make different purchases. The Direct Express card can be easily used at ATMs, banks, or credit unions.
