Anna Maria Island may have one of the smallest populations on our list. But it’s one of the best small towns in the Sunshine State to retire. It’s perfect for those looking for a more tight-knit beach community.

You can relish this barrier island’s majestic white sand beaches, have your meals at one of its many delectable locally-owned restaurants, and spend your time visiting its unique art galleries or antique stores.

This Florida neighborhood is also a popular hangout for relaxing on the pier and fishing. Statistically, it’s the safest town on this list, with crime rates that are an incredible 86% below the state’s average.

All in all, it’s the perfect place just to relax and take up painting the sunsets on the beach!

  1. Would it be possible to have some information on the 6 places to retire in Florida to me. I’m 70 years young and thinking of moving to Florida permanently to be with My Daughter and Grandchildren who moved there a year ago and I haven’t been to visit them yet. But I am Retired. Thanks

  2. What kind of housing for seniors in Lake Wales and Lake Alfred? I’m interested in small houses and condos. Please mail inf. 2118 Freeland Road, Freeland, MD 21053.
    Thank you

  3. Your stats and comments don’t jive. The crime rate for Gainesville is about 1:25. That doesn’t sound safe at all! You say Edgewater is a bigger city (pop. 21,000+)than the others in the list. Gainesville has a population over 150,000, many times larger than Edgewater!? I can’t read anymore of this
