6. Don’t Focus on Why You Need It, Focus on Why You Deserve It
Everyone knows why employees want raises. It’s all about money, at the end of the day. So if you go to a meeting with your boss planning on sharing personal details you won’t be telling them anything they don’t already know. More money for the kids, car, house, medical expenses… pretty much everyone has the exact same reason.
That’s why you need to stand out and point out why you deserve a raise, not why you need it. As we said earlier, talk about your work and how you’ve grown. The last thing your boss needs to hear is how much debt you’re in and how you’re planning on paying it back.
Don’t make this mistake even if your boss is open to sharing personal details around the office. In a discussion about your salary, they need to know how your work will benefit the company. Stick to that and you’ll increase your chances.
