Now, you could have done everything by the book, but your boss might still decline your request. Sometimes it may be due to circumstances out of their control. Other times they might want to see more from you.

And that’s OK. You don’t have to see this as the end of the line. Ask for honest feedback and try to schedule an interim performance appraisal with clearly defined goals and salary adjustments. Also, see if you can both agree on a project or goals you should try to meet to prove that you truly deserve the raise or promotion.

If, however, you’ve received confirmation that a raise won’t be happening any time soon, now’s your chance to ask for something else, or at least open the door to other opportunities that you could close in on at a later date- think more vacation time or professional development opportunities.
