Getting Started: What You’ll Need
Before you can request your first ride, you need just a few things to get set up. Think of this as gathering your ingredients before you start cooking. The good news is, you probably have most of these already.
First, you need a smartphone. This is the most important tool. A smartphone is a mobile phone that can connect to the internet and run applications, or “apps.” The most common types are iPhones (made by Apple) and Android phones (made by companies like Samsung, Google, or Motorola). Unfortunately, older “flip phones” or basic cell phones that only make calls and send texts won’t work for this.
Second, you will need an email address. When you create an account with Uber or Lyft, they will ask for an email address. This is used to send you receipts for your rides and to communicate important account information. If you don’t have one, a family member can help you set one up for free with services like Gmail or Yahoo.
Third, you must have a mobile phone number. The service will use your phone number to verify your account when you sign up. It’s also how a driver can contact you with a quick call or text if they have trouble finding your pickup spot.
And finally, you’ll need a form of electronic payment. The easiest and most common method is a credit card or a debit card. Your card information is entered into the app one time when you create your account. It is stored securely, and you will not have to enter it again for each ride. Some services may also allow you to connect a PayPal account or use a gift card, but a standard credit or debit card is the most straightforward option.
That’s it! A smartphone, an email address, a phone number, and a payment card are all you need to unlock the convenience of on-demand transportation.
