Which are the states with the highest monthly Social Security payouts?
Now that you have a better understanding of the elements that determine your Social Security benefit, it’s time to see why certain states boast higher average monthly payouts.
To find out which states have the highest average monthly Social Security payouts, we looked into the SSA’s Supplemental Data Release for 2021. We’ve used the geographic data section to see how much was paid by the federal program to retirees in each state, as well as how many retirees there were in those states.
Dividing the former by the latter yields an average annual payout per retiree for each state. This annual payout is then divided by 12 to yield an average monthly benefit.
The end result is that retirees in the following states are getting the highest monthly Social Security payouts in the country. Keep reading to find those states!
