Nicaragua

Taking its spot in Central America and one of the most affordable countries on our list, Nicaragua is also known as “The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes.”

The country meets the shores of both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, so there are a ton of beachfront properties to go around, in addition to beautiful lakes, rivers, and rainforests.

The cost of living is fairly low, and there are residency options for retired folks requiring a $600 monthly income. In most areas, US dollars are accepted, and the Nicaraguan government offers tax stimuli and promotes investment in the nation.

For instance, a great incentive is that out-of-country earnings aren’t taxable.

Cambodia

By all standards, the charming little beach towns around Sihanoukville and Kampot in Cambodia are a huge bargain, making it one of the most affordable countries to move to. Finding a lovely house or apartment to rent in the $250 to $500 per month range is not unusual.

Some ex-pats say they must REALLY try to spend more than $1,200 a month unless they travel somewhere. And not much will grab a big chunk of your income. Well, except maybe the electric bill for air conditioning if you decide to buy a big house with central air.

Costs for eating out, groceries, drinking, and transportation are all a small fraction of what you’d spend in our country. The downside is that you might have to fly to Bangkok if you need a first-rate hospital to deal with any health issues.
