Moving checklist for relocating in retirement

This moving checklist for retirees has many elements in common with a moving list for non-retired people. But, certain parts are more specific to the lives of people who are about to retire and who already have. This includes:

  • Decluttering: Your first step should be to take inventory of all your things to reduce the number of nonessential items. You should make room for experiences, new people, and adventures, and leave all that extra junk behind!
  • Talk to your old and new utility companies about your moving dates. You don’t want to be in that awkward situation where you can’t cook dinner in your new home because your utilities haven’t been turned on yet.
  • Find a reputable moving company: You shouldn’t be stressed by dealing with a company that loses or breaks things. Or one that doesn’t bother getting the job done on time. So you should do your research. We recommend checking out a potential moving company on at least three websites and getting a couple of estimates first.
  • Get moving insurance for your fragile, valuable items, like artwork.
  • If healthcare is an immediate issue, make sure you have sufficient amounts of your prescription meds and refills available. Also, try to get in any essential doctor visits before you move to avoid pressure to get them done when you move into your new location.
  • Make a list of all places you will have to update your address: This will undoubtedly be a neverending list. So take your time and write it all down when you’re in a clear and calm state of mind to make sure you don’t miss anything.
  • Remember mail forwarding!
