The Reality of Senior Dental Costs and Medicare Limits
Traditional Medicare does not pay for routine checkups, cleanings, fillings, or dentures. Section 1862(a)(12) of the Social Security Act legally prohibits Medicare from covering standard dental health services.
According to research from KFF, roughly 65% of traditional Medicare beneficiaries lack any dental coverage whatsoever. Consequently, nearly half of all Medicare recipients skip dental visits entirely each year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that one in five seniors has untreated tooth decay. Furthermore, roughly 15% of older Americans have lost all their natural teeth.
Recent updates from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) offer slight relief. Medicare now covers dental work directly linked to critical treatments like organ transplants, cardiac valve replacements, and cancer therapies.
However, that narrow exception leaves everyday restorative care out of reach for most people. When you need a root canal, extraction, or new bridge, you must look beyond traditional coverage.

I live on Social Security and can’t afford to pay for dentures. I’m diabetic and need to eat the right foods like vegetables and protein. I can’t eat anything that is not soft, so eating a proper diabetic meal is very difficult

The VA doesn’t cover dental either unless you’re 100% and even thats in certain cases. And forget those phones online all they send you is beads.

What is the income cap, in retired 70 yes. Old wife works but barely brings enough home to pay the bills, we’re being eaten alive by all of this inflation.
