Is the COLA Enough in 2025?

Advocacy groups like The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) continue to raise concerns that the current method for calculating COLA is not keeping up with the actual expenses faced by seniors. The organization highlights that the costs of goods and services required by older Americans are increasing at a much faster rate than their Social Security benefits.

According to TSCL, there has been a significant erosion of purchasing power for retirees over the past two decades.[6] The group’s research indicates that Social Security benefits have lost approximately 30% of their buying power since the year 2000. Many seniors and advocates argue that the CPI-W does not accurately reflect the spending habits of retirees, who dedicate a larger portion of their income to healthcare and housing.

As a result, there is a growing call to update the COLA formula. In a recent survey, 72% of older Americans stated that changing the calculation to an index that better reflects their costs should be a top priority for Congress.[7] One proposed alternative is the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E), which gives more weight to the expenses that disproportionately affect seniors.

  1. Pending
President Obama & Biden you have destroyed our true American lives! I only draw social security and I ( thanks to immigrants, and Obama care health insurance I had to pay taxes to IRS

  2. The COLA isn’t enough to pay for all my bills it’s not enough to buy my groceries I am struggling and it makes me ill. All the COLA increases in the past weren’t enough to buy anything I’m still struggling.

  3. The administration must think that all retirees are stupid! To provide a 3.2% increase for 2024 doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the cost that retirees incur. Most of our increase for this year was eliminated by increases in Medicare and Medicare related cost. In addition, current inflation is at 3.9% and rising and its only early May. Food costs and gasoline are increasing constantly, and apparently they think that we do not eat food or go anywhere. They need to update the components for calculating the retiree, inflation rate and give us a realistic number.

  4. The donut hole in Medicare is a killer for those of us retirees on fixed income. My husband and I are both on a medicine for type 2 diabetes and as of April have put us in the donut hole. This means the medicine for the two of us would increase $400 dollars a month. We cannot afford this. What are we to do? Government employees do not have to worry about this since we pay for all their health needs.

    1. HA HA $50 MIGHT BUY A TANK AND AHALF OF GAS OR MAYBE 1 WEEK OF GROCERIES IF MEDICAIRE DOESN’T DECIDE TO TAKE THEIR SHARE How many more older people are going to die or become homeless after working and contributing all these years

    2. AMEN TO ABOVE COMMENT I guess they didn’t like my comments about how many more seniors will die or become homeless for lack of nutrician or if much will be left after Medicaire/taxes take their share

    3. Yeah, and ‘They’ vote themselves high raises and vote us very ‘Low’ increases. How is it that all these ‘politicians’ become millionaires after serving? They cut our benefits, but give ‘Millions’ away to other countries. Take care of ‘Us’ first.

  5. The border should be closed and if immigrants continue to cross it their countries should be charged…..I know the US is the land of the free but why are the US handing out free benefits to people who have not put anything into the systems and there are US citizens suffering, CHILDREN, SENIORS AND OUR SOLDIERS…THIS IS SHAMEFUL TAKE CARE OF HOME FIRST ..And how are the US supporting these thousands of people its unfair to the citizens…DO THE RIGHT THING AND TAKE CARE OF HOME THESE PEOPLE KNOW WHAT THE US DOES GIVE THEM ALL BENEFITS. THE WORD IS OUT US IS SOFT FOR IMMIGRANTS….GOD SAVE AND DELIVER THIS COUNTRY…🙏❤️

  6. My medficare this year cost more so i ended up losing 27 a month in my SS check…COLA is a joke…..

  7. I guess we need to give more to the illegal aliens that are so vested in our country. Guess I’ll work the rest of my life.

  8. Douch bag. Low life DUMBCRAT Assholes..Trying to rigg the election. By Amy means possible…Low Life Loosers…

  9. My check went down the last two out of three years because my medicare payment went up more than the COLA….what the hell is that ? Hold Harmless clause says you can’t go BACKWARDS !!

  10. I was struggling with making ends meet with my Social Security income, so I went and got me a part time job. Unfortuntately I lived in a place that went by my income, it was unfortunate for me because they took that income and added to my Social Security income and doubled my rent, and then medicare took away some of my benfits that I was getting and now I have to pay MORE for the benenfits that I had before.

Well I am back where I started, again even after I got the job to make ends meet, the system has screwed me over once again. So I am not any better off now, than I was before I got the job.

Now I have to make another decision, which is should I keep the job and struggle or quit the job and still
    struggle.

This practice is very unfair, I expected to pay more but not double and not immendiatly they should at least give you a year for a part time/full time before new rent is added if you still have the senior employment after that year. Also the housing should not be able to raise your rent when you get that little COL from Social Sercurity Benefits!

  11. thats nice but inflation was more than 3.2% thankyou repugnitcons for using this cola figure why not use for yourselves you welfare bums thankyou for not raising the income cap for SS tax

  12. Gee, $50 – that’s 2/3 of a tank of gas! What a big increase – – – NOT! The COLA should be in the double digit range.

  13. I am very thankful, appreciate it!!! Come up with some ideas yourself??? This is America and many opportunities, you must work for them and use your ingenuity. Best wishes!!!

  14. Every time there’s an increase, it’s taken by increase in Medicare, so it’s not really much of an improvement.

  15. Why at 76 i have to pay taxes on my SS and small pension. You can”t claim anything anymore , and i paid for these my whole working career, this is not fair to Seniors

    1. Today’s Economic System is a disaster..either you RICH or POOR. Retirees & Seniors who worked throughout their lives are blessed to receive their Pensions and Social Security. But remains scrambling or stressed out to hold on to the basic essentials, e.g. their homes, health, home, prescription and vehicle insurance(s), property taxes, food, etc. No break for the weary, it’s a sin against us all when you have to revamp going to work and SURPRISE, you have to hope not being paid over the Senior’s Income Cap. Then “UNCLE SAM” IS RIGHT BACK INTO YOUR POCKET/BOOK(S).

  16. Yes, they give you a COLA increase in Social Security and then take it back by increasing the Medicare deduction. You actually get lots of propaganda and a few pennies. Whoopee!

  17. You all need to do due diligence on taxation of Social Security. It wasn’t taxed until 1984 when a bill backed by Sen. Biden raised it o 50% and in 1993 it was raised to 85% taxable with a 32,000 base deduction, again supported by Biden.
One of the problems is that the base taxation of SS applies to everyone therefore everyone gets benefits based on their last 10 years of contribution. This is currently limited to incomes below $168,600 which also creates an issue – if they raise the limit high earners are taxed more, this also increases the benefits they will receive on retirement.
Eliminating taxes on SS benefits will no affect low income earners because they already pay very little. But it will benefit the middle Class and higher earners,

  18. It’s a shame how the government charges us for Medicare each month. Private ins is cheaper. But we have no choice they take it anyway. But don’t understand this that is you or ur spouse gets sick and you file a lawsuit and win you have to pay medicare back for what they paid for the illness. Why then do we have to have this taken every month. We pay for this and we should not have to pay them back. Where is this right or fair.

  19. What is this nonsense? Citizens want an idea of what COLA will do in 2025, less than two months from now. Your email reads as though it may be a possible introduction to a scam.

This specific, precise email should have arrived about a year ago. Are you on something?

  20. How much is part B Medicare going up. We only get a raise on paper. It all goes for Medicare increases. SMH. We are the forgotten Americans.

  21. Why would you report on something that has already happened. Why are you not reporting on what we will receive for 2025? Because it’s going to be less?

  22. How about we get an increase with the congressman as senators get I think that would be a fair increase when you give a crap. I’ll be lucky if I go off for breakfast twice a week you can’t even go to McDonald’s for lunch with that money so how about give us a good increase Penny penny shit thank you.
How come we don’t count the price of the gas and the food went up will you come with 3.2% is a joke that’s not an increase. That’s an insult. I could be a wet back. Come across the ball. I get everything for nothing. I worked all my life here and you give me peanuts you’re better off being inlegal You get every thing

  23. Why do you refer to it as “a cola increase for 2024” when 2024 is almost over? What about an increase for 2025?

  24. The way they figure COLA, is not in accordance to true pricing of medicine and food cost. Automobile insurance and maintenance, wake up Congress people.

  25. Seems like the lower your income, the more increased you should get. Heck you’ll get hundreds and thousands of dollars a month, when our cost of living gives us $20 a month. What kinda cost of living is that. You could barely but a happy meal with that. Maybe someday you’ll be in our situation.

  26. Yeah, that’s hundreds and thousands a month extra, you’ll get for cost of living. You’ll just care about yourself and Taking money from us. All you’re doing, is killing us slowly. U will pay your dues, after death.

  27. I got my notice today, and it was NOT good news! $ 55.00 more I S N O T ENOUGH!!!
    My rent went U P $65.00 a month!!!

  28. I’m retired since 2000, and don’t have the benefit of Social Security at this moment. So I’m currently working to complete 7 credits, hopefully by April 2025. How it’ll impact my pension?

  29. I’m still under the poverty level but I’m glad to get any help I can. I retired early at 62 so I guess that why I’m under the full retirement.

  30. I have worked 39 years and I became disabled in 2015 I was self employed and all my earnings are missing so I brought it to the local office and they acted like they didn’t want to deal with it so I mailed it to the office of earnings in Baltimore and apparently it was not the right office they called me 3 weeks ago saying they were going to get it to the correct office and someone would call me I have not heard anything and don’t know where they send it I’ve been homeless twice and on the verge again I’ve lost my home of 16 years my car my job and independence I get no help from the government and I’m being paid the least amount anymore can get and my original documents are floating around I’m livid

  31. I did not get the increase instead my check was decrease. I do not owe the goverment so what happened to my increase? it is not fair my check is small I do not get a large check. some body was not doing there jobI want my increase please look at what you as a worker did to me, thank you Ms.A .Gaudin

  32. We may have a COLA increase of $50 but you fail to mention that Medicare has an increase and takes away the $50.00.

So what happens to our increase in the COLA.

  33. Hard working people lucky enough to reach retirement get a $50.00 increase, then have to pay taxes on it so why give it in the 1st place? When Congress gives themselves a raise, it is way more than $50.00. It is an insult how the Government treats senior citezens. $50.00 doesn’t buy a tank of gas today. So don’t think you got something worth celebrating about, you sure didn’t.

  34. Why am I beinging past up on every level.
Covid cost me my job and I had to take early retirement. All the stimulus money in programs that doesn’t help someone like me. All the money given to State’s or should I say, AH governors, who use our stimulus money to build a convention center instead of working to help the homeless or allowing slum lords to take advantage of poor or low income elderly.
Why don’t I matter dame it???

  35. This is old information. You should be showing the potential increase for this year 2025, which I believe will be in the 2-3 % range.

  36. When you factor in the increase in Medicare expenses, the increase the COLA increase is not worth much.

  37. Thanks for the 50.00 dollar increase.. Oh wait wait wait… Here it is your Premium for your Medicare just went up!!!! There goes our COLA raise…why bother we never see it!!!

  38. Need funds to establish my trading office and also elevate my potential. The money is refundable in the future. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  39. Throw the elderly crumbs and expect thanks, sir, with tears in our eyes. Please, sir, I want some more (Oliver Twist)

  40. Where did they come up with 2.5 percent? Inflation was higher than that. It is a disgrace how this country keeps taking from the poor and giving to the rich.

  41. None of those things mentioned actually Direcyly effect seniors on Social Security. Only the ones needing those services. NOT ALL SENIORS.
    I still waiting for the…
    NO TAX on SOCIAL SECURITY

  42. WORKING AMERICANS GET FUCKED ANYHOW.> IF YOU ARE ILLEGAL, THE DEMOCRATS WILL MAKE SURE YOU GET EVERYTHING FREE FREE FREE> AMERICANS GET IT UP THE ASS.

  43. Don’t forget Medicare Monthly Premium will also go up taking away from that little bit of a pocket change so called raise they give…Yeah, on Congress gives themselves a raise every year and I may be wrong but in past it’s a 17% raise, probably more now…Congress is there to serve themselves for all the big benefits while they steal from the little people

  44. What a joke. $50, I can do buy me a piece of gum now. All the so called money saved from DOGE and all seniors get is $50. Government is so corrupt.

  45. Our part B premiums should be froze at the time of retirement. Increasing COLA and Part B premiums is rip off.

  46. I would like to know how they figure 2.5 percent when gas an oil prices is still high , all my expenses went up a lot , house insurance , utilities, property taxes , still paying about 200 a week for grocery’s an it doesn’t even buy much good if we all got 6 to 8 percent cola it still wouldn’t cover the price increases we have to absorb in the last yr or 2 talk about a joke my parents always said the cola they give is joke the rich never feel the pain they give out a certain amount an you have to sit back an take it all in , when you are retired a lot of these taxes should go away because you aren’t working anymore making 1000 dollars a week or more

  47. wow,
and why not get rid of property tax for seniors who own a home to live in,

  48. why are you sending out information regarding COLA increases that supposedly occurred in January of 2025-it is not September of 2025. This is old news why are we seeing it now? P.S. Not everyone got a COLA anyway. What happened to the pretend campaign promise Trump blabbed about where our social security would not be taxed?? Another lie to add to the list!!

  49. To add insult to injury, They didn’t adjust the medicaid cola to the actual cost of living. So when they decide to give you a 2- 2.5% increase on social security you are phased out of your secondary benefits from medicaid as this little 2% increase disqualifies you for much needed medicaid as a result costed me thousands of dollars for groceries and health co pays and ductibles which I didn’t have before. It’s not fun to decide going without medication to buy groceries because of medicaid not keeping up with the cost of living increases.

  50. COLA. should be the same as the increase government employee get, i.e. IRS employees, Congressmen and Congresswomen etc. I am sure that there would be a revolution if they were given a 2 1/2 per increase Why are we so disrespectful to those who paid into Social Security for so many years surely should be treated not less than Those we pretend to care and work for the people while getting rich with outrageous salary increases compared to Social Security Citizens. Not to bring up the founding fathers expected congressman to serve their term then go back to doing whatever they did prior. Allowing younger and citizens who wish to serve in government. Those Congressmen who make a life time career of being a position are really just thieves in sheets clothing not one is honorable or have ethics as in taking advantage of insider trading etc. SHAME ON CONGRESS !
