6. Claiming benefits but continuing to work

Another one of the main reasons for reduced Social Security benefits is claiming the benefits and then continuing to work. Experts say that people who didn’t reach full retirement age but claimed benefits might have part or even all of their benefits temporarily withheld.

Things change when you reach full retirement age because then there will be no penalty for working after claiming those benefits. Of course, your benefits will be recalculated so you can get credit for your withheld payments and continued earnings.
