The $1,000 isn’t necessarily the only outside money. A growing number of companies have pledged to match the Treasury’s $1,000 deposit for employees’ children, and philanthropists in several states have committed funds to help seed accounts for qualifying families. It’s worth asking whether anyone in your family’s orbit qualifies for an extra boost.
