Anchorage, Alaska

Alaska has one of the lowest populations of any state in the US. Yet it’s apparently the most hazardous to live in. It has 838 violent crimes per 100,000 people, 360 more than Michigan and 55 more than its nearest rival, New Mexico.

But even though it has high crime rates, this particular state is one of only 14 that saw a drop in 2020, although its 3.4% drop is not as noteworthy as New Mexico’s decline. The state’s violent crime rate is more than double that of our country’s rate of 398.5.

Admittedly, most of the state’s significant crimes occur in major cities, with Anchorage taking the lead, experiencing 1,171 violent crimes. Anchorage houses about 40% of the state’s population yet sees nearly 60% of the total recorded violent offenses.
