Required Certifications: RBS and TIPS
Before you begin serving alcohol in a tasting room or taproom, state regulations or employer insurance policies usually require official training in responsible beverage service. These courses teach you how to check guest identification, recognize signs of intoxication, and handle service refusals diplomatically.
The two most common standard courses are Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) and Training for Intervention ProcedureS (TIPS):
- Cost: Certification courses typically cost between $15 and $55, which you or your employer pay online.
- Time Commitment: You can complete these self-paced online modules in about 2 to 4 hours from your home computer.
- Validity: Most state alcohol server certifications remain valid for 2 to 3 years before requiring a brief renewal refresher.
Having your server certification listed on your resume before you apply makes you an immediate, turn-key candidate for hiring managers.
