North Dakota, Bismark

You may not expect the capital city of a state to be on our list, but when it comes to the Peace Garden State, Bismark is definitely one town to keep an eye out for if you’re looking to escape the heat. Not only that, but when it comes to this capital state, you will also be able to bloom in retirement as the economy here is booming, and you can definitely count on the fact that you will be able to live here comfortably (the city is right on track with the national average when we are talking about the cost of living).

Bismark is also a city to keep on your radar if you are looking into working despite being retired, as they are known to be very pro-hiring older adults, with the service sector preferring this option. What’s more, you will be able to get very good healthcare here, and with the Missouri River going through the city, you will be able to participate in a lot of retirement leisure activities, including hiking, biking, and other water activities during the warmer months. Retirees are also known to favor this city, with about 15.7% of the population being over the age of 65.

When it comes to the heat factor, Bismark is the coldest average city on our list (yes, despite Alaska being here too). The median temperatures in January come up to 1°F, and you need to make sure that cold does not bother you during the winter months because it is not a joke. Otherwise, in July, the average goes up to 85°F, which is more than comfortable weather for any activities you may want to partake in!
