Recognising Symptoms and Taking Instant Action
Recognizing the warning signs of a heart attack early saves lives and preserves cardiac muscle. While chest pain remains the most recognized symptom, warning signs can present differently depending on your gender and overall health.
Classic symptoms include severe pressure, squeezing, or fullness in the center of your chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or goes away and returns. Pain or discomfort often radiates into one or both arms, the upper back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
Women, older adults, and individuals with diabetes frequently experience subtle or atypical symptoms. These can include unexplained shortness of breath, sudden cold sweats, nausea, lightheadedness, or unusual morning fatigue. Never dismiss these symptoms as simple heartburn or indigestion.
If you or someone near you exhibits these warning signs, call 911 immediately. Never attempt to drive yourself to the hospital or rely on a neighbor. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel can initiate life-saving treatment inside the ambulance long before you reach the emergency department.
