I was stationed in FL 8 years in the panhandle at two bases, and am a full time RVer who has spent 5 winters traveling around the state.
I have seen dozens of snakes to include many venomous snakes, and seen at least a dozen alligators. No pythons though, and no palm rats.
To live in FL all your life and not have seen these things shows you don’t travel in your own state and never venture out of cities and large suburbs.

Now, to deal with the real problem, let’s get some real programs to qualify and put our minority people on decent long term jobs? It is possible because I have done it. Takes a bit of work, and a ton of honest desire to make it happen. I am sure that many of the unemployed minorities would love to have a long term job with decent pay and benefits. NO, I did not say hire more of them, unless you are prepared to do what it takes to get them permanently employed. Hiring numbers mean nothing if you fire them after a few months.
Percentage wise, the minorities probably do have more on welfare and raising multiple children. That does have a cause and a lot of that can be cured by helping people get educated or trained for living wage jobs. Of course bringing in millions more non-skilled people is not the best way to help solve the problem. What we do need is for welfare to be tied to getting trained for a job that exists, and giving those people the chance to succeed. What we are doing now, is making it so expensive that many people cannot own or rent shelter, and they end up as homeless. Raising taxes, and the cost of living will only add more to the homeless rolls. Inefficient as they were, we still have many schools, parks, bridges, conservation projects built by the ccc and wpa. Those programs gave welfare while people did meaningful work, and learned work skills. I find very few cases where welfare makes sense unless it is tied to meaningful work or training to qualify for work. The only racial component I have seen is the challenge of getting them into meaningful jobs, and keeping them there. I have trained, supervised, hired and seen many minorities succeed. IT CAN BE DONE. A lifetime spent giving adult training coupled with real jobs using their new skills.

I disagree about Deltona; there is a wonderful walking/biking trail which many seniors enjoy every day, there are more shops etc being built every day as the housing developers continue accommodate the influx of people moving to the town. It is true there is not much in the way of entertainment but the nearby towns offer many great options. There is also a wonderful library and nature preserve which offers many free activities for all ages
We shouldn’t be sending so much money over to Ukrain and Israel. Citizens in this country could use it more. There is no affordable housing anymore and people are hungry

Over half these towns are in the Tampa Bay area and don’t need additional hospitals in their communities. Also if they are retiring to FL, why is employment an issue? I guarantee there are many job openings all over FL.

My husband I moved to Florida in 2019 and shortly after the Pandemic hit and I was actually glad to be in Florida so I could at least walk around my neighborhood in Wellington. Yes we had a pond and we saw signs for alligator sighting and to be aware but I never saw one the whole year I lived there but did see some interesting birds and our complex backed up to a animal preserve. We then bought a condo in North Palm Beach near the intercostal and again we have been here 3 going on 4 years and have never seen an alligator. We live in a nice older condo community and we love our walks and sitting down at the harbor at the end of our block. We live not far from 2 beautiful beaches that we enjoy that always clean and well cared for. We have nice farmers markets in the fall and winter and we have free concerts and so many activities. There is employment for seniors if you want or need to work. Your article really gave Florida a bad retiree rap. I don’t know about the cities you mentioned except for the Villages which I have never really heard anything great about that city and would have no desire to live there.. Just don’t tell people not to move for the stupid reasons you stated.
I moved to the east coast because it had a more thriving social scene, theatre, concerts, wonderful dining, etc. than Sanibel environs, which I always loved for vacation. Still, I ended in an HOA hell I had no idea about. After a lifetime of challenges and hard work, having a community plan to take care of the exterior home sounded great. Except they are filled with entitled people who want you to fund increased amenities prior to the services or excluding the full services. It’s a constant harangue and you weigh the pros and cons, deal with it or go through the ordeal of moving again in your senior years. The laws don’t protect you and it depends on your State Attorney if he is inclined to. It’s truly awful.

I have lived in five different states during my 90 years, and Florida was the least expensive by far. Just like all the other states, entertainment depends on the local community, and how much you can afford to pay. For us, just being in Florida was a major source of entertainment. We were in the Ft Myers, Cape Coral area, and there is as much to do as anyplace we have lived. The ocean and beaches are an endless source of leisure. If the big ticket expensive things appeal to you, there is everything available in Tampa, Orlando, or Miami. Minor league baseball, hockey, basketball, college level sports and culture, which are more affordable are available. Major league spring training for baseball fans is fun and inexpensive. We were almost disappointed for not seeing one alligator outside of zoos or sanctuaries. Medical facilities are world class with anything you could ever need available. Living was amazingly inexpensive with utilities very affordable. I suppose the fear of a hurricane does dampens some people, but in the midwest we heard about all those tornadoes, and now here in California we worry about fires and earthquakes.. I would highly recommend that area for someone wanting to retire to a “No winter” climate.

We spent a year in Cape Coral, Fl and loved it. Sure it was hot in summer, but our utilities were very reasonable and we had good air conditioning. Saved on cost of condo, saved on groceries, found lots of thing to do and enjoyed it. Only reason for leaving was our daughter lives in Calif. and we now live there. It is a serious downgrade in costs and living conditions, but our only choice for our golden years. Our summer temps include many temps over 100 F now, and our utilities cost a lot more. Everything costs more in Calif including taxes. Yes, crime is out of control here and I do not know if it has gone up in Florida. Some of these issues are the result of political hacks running the state, and probably a lot of it is just the natural increase in costs of everything. Homelessness is going crazy here, and the costs of housing are out of reach for many low skilled people. Probably a very bad idea to move to or live in Calif if you have no job, no skills, and no income to pay the increased costs. Makes absolutely no sense to provide for unemployed immigrants living in Calif. Could live for a fraction of the costs in many midwest and southern states. IF you have a job or job skills, Florida is an excellent choice.

Now live in Colorado and if you want to talk taxes just come here! sales tax 8+%, registration of you vehicle is astronomical….. we had a new motorhome in Florida and license plates were $49.00 per year, we sold her at 26 years old and were paying $169 per year.
We pay more in Real Estate taxes here than we paid on a bigger house in Florida. We do unfortunately have a California governor and he spends like DC.

Factors such as transportation, access to businesses like food shopping, stores, entertainment, etc, are very important. Key West is a nice place in Florida and if you make good friends with the alligators, crocodiles and snakes, they will give you a kiss. They are God’s good creatures and in the wild, it will take a skill to build a relationship with these animals. Florida also has the best law enforcement and that is one of the reasons why Florida is a nicer state to live and work in. New York is one of the worst and this past January, crime was at its worst in which on January 27th in a subway station and in a sports shop, a shoplifter stabbed a cashier and three migrants attacked law enforcement and it will be suicide to move to New York. This may sound like hyperbole but, read the news and get the facts. Be smart by knowing the score before playing the game, using context anyway.

As a 5th generation Floridian and have always and always will call Florida home, I love this article! It may be negative but it is mostly true. Unfortunately us natives have to listen to all these same complaints from those that migrate here. The worst part is some of the bad things like traffic congestion and high property taxes are a direct result from the mass of relocating residents. Me and many other born and raised Floridians would love the influx to slow and hopefully preserve native wildlife species that are quickly running out of habitat.
