An excellent local cheese selection isn’t the only reason why many retirees choose to spend their golden years in Wisconsin. This mid-western state is also famous for its beautiful nature, solid healthcare access, year-round festivals, and abundance of watersports and activities.
According to recent data, Kohler, King, and Elm Grove are the top three places to retire here, but if you prefer more big-city amenities, you’ll want to consider Madison and Milwaukee.
The cost of living is around 10% lower than the national average, and housing costs are quite affordable, being 20% below the national average. Unfortunately, income taxes in Wisconsin are rather on the high side. Also, if you live permanently here, the same portion of your pension income that’s taxed by the federal government will be taxed by the state too.
Don’t forget that Wisconsin is one of the coldest states in the US. However, you’ll get to enjoy nice, cool summers and experience all four seasons. The drawback is that you’ll also get harsh winters along with the risk of flooding and blizzards.
