4. South Dakota

If you’re a fan of small-town vibes, history, majestic vistas, hunting, fishing, and water activities, then South Dakota may be exactly what you’re looking for. This Midwestern state provides its residents with all of the above, plus no state income tax and a low cost of living.

With four different regions to choose from, it’s quite easy to find your perfect place for retirement in South Dakota. For the history buff, we truly recommend the West Region, where you can find Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and Black Hills National Forest.

Water lovers should choose the Central Region, where they can live their retirement years to the fullest on the Missouri River. If you enjoy hunting, you should check out the Northeast Region, also known as “hunting country,” with its wineries and all-inclusive lodges, as well as the amenities and live entertainment that accompany them. For fine arts, shopping, dining, and culture, head to the Southeast Region.

The two main cons of living in South Dakota are the long, brutal winters (167 days per year with temperatures below freezing) and the small population, though this may be a good thing for some folks.

I hope nobody comes to Oregon based on the information in this article. Contrary to what is stated, Oregon’s legislators seem to spend a lot of time thinking up new things to tax. There’s even an “art tax” on income in the Portland metro area, to support Portland “art”.
