9. Iowa

Iowa boasts the country’s fourth-lowest cost of living, at nearly 20% below the national average. Not to mention that the housing prices are among the most reasonable on our list.

Iowa’s crime rate is also on the low side (perhaps because of the famous “Midwestern nice” we have all heard about). Plus, the state doesn’t experience the gridlock traffic that other states struggle with (we’re looking at you, Pennsylvania).

If you’re a city dweller at heart, check out Davenport, Sioux City, Cedar Rapids, and Des Moines. Outside of these, the small-town vibe is the name of the game. According to the latest data, the best places in Iowa to spend your retirement years are New Hampton, Windsor Heights, and Clear Lake.

Like many midwestern states, this one is known for its rolling hills and sprawling fields, perfect for a Sunday afternoon drive. What’s also great about Iowa is that it’s home to many natural wonders.

You can canoe down the Iowa River, explore the Crystal Lake Caves and the Maquoketa, swim in the clear waters of Spirit Lake (formed over 1000 years ago from melted glaciers), and enjoy the stunning view from Pikes Peak (the best vista in the state).

I hope nobody comes to Oregon based on the information in this article. Contrary to what is stated, Oregon’s legislators seem to spend a lot of time thinking up new things to tax. There’s even an “art tax” on income in the Portland metro area, to support Portland “art”.
