6. Maine

Abundant forests, lovely coastal towns with an easy-going New England vibe, a thriving community of seniors, and delicious local seafood. Yep, that’s Maine. This popular state is a magnet for nature-loving folk, sailors, and skiers alike.

If you’re looking for peace and quiet, you’ll find it here, along with stunning local art and impressive culinary scenes. Maine provides a lower cost of living compared to other US states, and there’s no state tax on Social Security income.

On the flip side, property taxes and state income taxes (Social Security aside) are relatively high. Excepting from the art scenes and local dining, you may find fewer entertainment opportunities than you’d prefer (if you’re more into big-city life, you won’t find it here).

Finally, the winters in Maine are (you guessed it) bitter. However, the roads are incredibly well plowed, and life goes on—although while wearing a few layers of merino wool.

In Pennsylvania one always looks to the East but forgets the lovely town of Erie! Maybe I should just keep quiet as it the best little secret around…

I hope nobody comes to Oregon based on the information in this article. Contrary to what is stated, Oregon’s legislators seem to spend a lot of time thinking up new things to tax. There’s even an “art tax” on income in the Portland metro area, to support Portland “art”.
