7. Michigan

There are several reasons why you should put Michigan on your list of retirement states. Affordable homes, a relatively low income tax rate, a low cost of living, and not to mention stunning scenery.

The Great Lakes State gets its nickname from the Great Lakes that surround the two peninsulas. You may be surprised to learn that Michigan also has a great variety of landscapes to offer. From dunes and wetlands to beaches and forests, the Great Lakes State offers so much more than the nickname suggests.

And while the more popular cities may be Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Ann Arbor, there are lots of charming little towns across the state that are definitely perfect for seniors (as long as you don’t mind the cold).

According to the latest data, the three best places to spend your retirement years in Michigan are some of the suburbs of Detroit: Pleasant Ridge, the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, and Bingham Farms.

I hope nobody comes to Oregon based on the information in this article. Contrary to what is stated, Oregon’s legislators seem to spend a lot of time thinking up new things to tax. There’s even an “art tax” on income in the Portland metro area, to support Portland “art”.
